Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has articulated a possibility for India to assume a more active role in fostering peace within West Asia, amidst escalating tensions involving Iran and the United States. Singh, speaking in Berlin on Wednesday, suggested that "the time may come when India plays its role in this and achieves success as well." He emphasized India's consistent, "balanced diplomatic approach" championed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, noting that such efforts are contingent on favorable timing and global conditions.
Singh highlighted that New Delhi's diplomacy had facilitated the passage of Indian vessels through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical maritime chokepoint, even amid heightened regional instability. He further pointed to Prime Minister Modi's personal engagements with various world leaders, including those involved in current conflicts, to encourage dialogue and peaceful resolution. Singh's remarks were made during an interaction with the Indian diaspora in Berlin.

Diplomatic Balancing Act
The Defence Minister's statements arrive as peace talks between Iran and the United States, reportedly stalled over Iran's nuclear enrichment program, present a complex geopolitical landscape. Reports indicate that US President Donald Trump had announced a temporary extension to a ceasefire with Iran, though Iran reportedly viewed this as a tactic.
Singh reiterated India's commitment to a balanced diplomatic stance, suggesting that New Delhi neither finds itself an adversary to the US nor to Iran. This positioning, he implied, could provide a foundation for future mediation efforts.
Context of the West Asia Crisis
The region has experienced significant conflict, with reports of aerial bombardments by the US and Israel against Iran commencing on February 28. The ongoing crisis has also involved naval blockades and diplomatic maneuvers, including Pakistan's reported request for US forces to delay an attack on Iran pending a unified proposal from Iranian leadership. Iran, however, has reportedly dismissed the ceasefire extension as a delay tactic.
