A strategic collaboration agreement signed between Indian Strategic Petroleum Reserves Limited and Abu Dhabi National Oil Company will see the United Arab Emirates storing up to 30 million barrels of crude oil as part of India's emergency stockpiles. This pact, announced following Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Abu Dhabi, aims to bolster India's energy security amidst ongoing volatility in global crude markets and heightened geopolitical tensions in West Asia.
The agreement signifies a deepening of energy cooperation between the two nations, with discussions also touching upon the establishment of strategic gas reserves within India. Furthermore, a separate arrangement was concluded between Indian Oil Corporation and ADNOC for the long-term supply of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG).
The move is particularly pertinent given India's substantial reliance on imports for its crude oil needs, importing over 80 percent of its consumption. Overseas storage is viewed as an additional layer of protection against potential supply disruptions. This initiative is framed as a strengthening of the broader India-UAE strategic partnership, extending beyond energy to encompass defence, shipping, and economic collaboration, with Abu Dhabi also committing significant investments in India. The agreements build upon previous discussions held during the UAE President's visit to India. Prime Minister Modi also conveyed India's strong condemnation of recent attacks within the UAE, expressing solidarity.

Broader Energy Pacts
Beyond crude oil storage, the two countries have inked a memorandum of understanding concerning Strategic Petroleum Reserves (SPR) and concluded an agreement for the supply of LPG. There is also contemplation of joint efforts in setting up storage facilities for both Liquid Natural Gas (LNG) and LPG within India.
Geopolitical Context
The timing of these agreements is notable, occurring against a backdrop of escalating geopolitical tensions in West Asia. Both leaders engaged in detailed discussions, with the Prime Minister reiterating India's condemnation of attacks on the UAE.
Strategic Petroleum Reserves Explained
Strategic Petroleum Reserves (SPRs) are government-managed emergency stockpiles of crude oil, designed to shield nations from supply shocks. Such reserves typically provide a buffer for a specific number of days of national crude oil consumption during emergencies.
