Scheme Continuity Amidst Shifting Alliances
The Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK) government is continuing welfare schemes previously initiated by the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), according to Ezhilan Naganathan, secretary of the DMK's medical wing. This observation comes as the political landscape in Tamil Nadu sees a significant reordering, with parties like the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) and the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) joining the ruling TVK administration.

DMK's Medical Wing Secretary Ezhilan Naganathan pointed to the ongoing implementation of programs like the 'Urimai Thittam', the 'Thayumanavar scheme', and the 'Pudhumai Penn Thittam' as evidence of this continuity.
The TVK government has also established a new 'Social Justice' department, which incorporates 'Adi Dravidar welfare'. This function was previously handled by the DMK and its rival, the AIADMK.
MK Stalin, a figure associated with the DMK, has criticized the TVK, stating it "lacks organisational structure" and is merely perpetuating the policies of the previous regime.
Political Realignment and Opposition Stance
The shift in alliances follows the recent Assembly election results, which have seen the DMK find itself increasingly isolated. The Congress party formally ended its ties with the DMK before aligning with the C Joseph Vijay-led TVK government. Meanwhile, the Communist Party of India (CPI) and the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPM) have opted to provide external support to the TVK, leaving the DMK with smaller political entities.

This realignment suggests a broader strategy by the TVK government to guide the state towards establishing a welfare state and achieving socio-economic justice, mirroring objectives previously espoused by Dravidian parties.
Background: National Schemes and State Governance
Discussions around welfare schemes also bring to mind national initiatives such as the Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana (PMSBY), an accidental death and disability insurance program, and the Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana (PMJJBY), a life insurance scheme. While these national programs offer specific benefits related to insurance and financial security, the focus of the current debate in Tamil Nadu centers on the continuation and implementation of state-specific welfare measures.
