Telangana's LPG Market Under Strain Amidst Global Tensions
Domestic LPG supplies in Telangana are slated for further reinforcement, with reports indicating that oil marketing companies are taking additional measures to ensure availability. This comes as households, particularly in rural areas, are experiencing difficulties in obtaining refills due to a noticeable spike of up to 40% in domestic LPG refill bookings in recent days. Officials, however, urge consumers to refrain from panic booking.
The central government has directed refineries to ramp up LPG production, explicitly prioritizing domestic household consumption. This directive stems from escalating geopolitical tensions in West Asia, a region critical to global energy flows. While officials assert that overall LPG supply in Telangana remains stable and warn against hoarding or black marketing, the immediate consequence of this prioritization is a looming shortage for commercial establishments, including restaurants and eateries, across the state.

The decision to funnel increased LPG production towards domestic users has created a precarious situation for businesses reliant on commercial cylinders. D Ashok Kumar, a senior office bearer of the Greater Hyderabad LPG Distributors Association, stated that a shortage for commercial establishments is "inevitable" given the current mandate to prioritize household supply. Restaurants and other food service providers are currently operating on existing stocks, a buffer that is rapidly diminishing. Exemptions have been made for critical facilities like hospitals and residential schools, which will continue to receive commercial LPG.

Meanwhile, civil supplies departments across the Telugu states are actively monitoring distribution and have initiated actions, such as the seizure of cylinders from hotels in Andhra Pradesh, to prevent diversion and black marketing.
