Senator Alleges City's Decline Under Incumbent's Tenure
Senator Ted Cruz has publicly aligned himself with Spencer Pratt, a challenger in the Los Angeles mayoral election, offering sharp criticism of incumbent Mayor Karen Bass. Cruz, in recent remarks, has pointed to what he describes as a "steep decline in the quality of life" for Angelenos under Bass's leadership.
Cruz suggests that L.A. voters are expressing dissatisfaction with Mayor Bass, to the point where even a potential endorsement from former President Donald Trump for Pratt would not significantly harm his campaign in the traditionally Democratic city.
Concerns Over Public Safety and Spending
Cruz’s critique centers on the perceived failures of Bass's administration, particularly regarding public safety and fiscal management. He alluded to a report that Pratt, who recently lost his home in the Palisades fire, blames Bass and other city officials for the blaze. Pratt has been vocal, claiming Bass's administration's policies exacerbated the situation.

“At the end of the day, the policies of Karen Bass have failed.”
Cruz further characterized Bass's leadership as prioritizing "social justice over the safety of her constituents," citing examples of city spending on initiatives he deemed frivolous, such as a "six-figure stroll through a transgender café" and funding for a "gay men's chorus."
Pratt's Campaign Gains Traction
The support from Cruz comes as Pratt's mayoral campaign appears to be gaining some momentum. Pratt has been actively campaigning, utilizing viral video content to attack Bass's record. Notably, he has garnered donations from several well-known figures, including former Lakers owner Jeanie Buss and individuals connected to reality television production. Reports indicate that Pratt has out-raised Bass in campaign contributions since January.
Pratt himself has stated that anger towards Bass's "mismanagement" is not confined to any particular political leaning, framing the mayoral race as a nonpartisan contest. His campaign gained significant attention following an advertising campaign critical of Bass's response to the 2025 Palisades Wildfires.

Background: The Los Angeles Mayoral Landscape
The current mayoral race in Los Angeles is a nonpartisan contest. If no candidate secures a majority of votes, a runoff election is scheduled for November 3. Spencer Pratt, a public figure known for his appearances on reality television, has positioned himself as a critic of the incumbent mayor. Ted Cruz, a Republican Senator from Texas, has increasingly weighed in on local political races outside his home state, often offering commentary critical of Democratic leadership.
