A nationwide initiative, 'Saree to Sanchi,' is repurposing discarded sarees into eco-friendly bags for the upcoming Kovalam Marathon in 2026. The campaign, spearheaded by Young Indians (Yi) Trivandrum, seeks to divert textiles from landfills and promote sustainability through upcycling.
The project officially kicked off during the 'National Climate Summit' held in Auroville, Puducherry. 'Saree to Sanchi' is actively soliciting donations of pre-loved sarees from a diverse group of prominent women across India. These include leaders, entrepreneurs, professionals, artists, educators, and individuals identified as change-makers. The collected sarees will be transformed into reusable marathon bags, specifically for the Kovalam Marathon, an event organized by Yi Trivandrum.
This effort extends beyond a single event, aiming to foster a broader culture of textile reuse and waste reduction across the country. Yi chapters nationwide are expected to participate in mobilizing community members for saree donations.
