BENGALURU — The Bengaluru Solid Waste Management Limited (BSWML) has introduced a new mobile application, 'DClutter', aimed at streamlining the collection of bulky household waste. The initiative seeks to curb the persistent issue of items like old furniture, mattresses, and appliances being dumped illegally in public spaces, contributing to what officials describe as "garbage black spots" and impacting the city's aesthetics and environment.
The 'DClutter' app allows residents to book doorstep pickups for discarded bulky items, a service previously outside the purview of regular garbage collection. The move is presented as a response to a problem exacerbated by rapid urbanisation and changing lifestyles, leading to increased consumerism and a greater volume of discarded large household goods.
Service Details and Rollout
The DClutter platform, accessible via a mobile app, enables citizens to schedule appointments for the removal of items such as sofas, cots, cupboards, mattresses, refrigerators, washing machines, commodes, and other large household materials.

Pickup Schedule: Initially, pickups are scheduled for Sundays. BSWML officials indicate a potential expansion to other days based on the volume of requests received.
Collection Frequency: Collections will occur once a week, with the specific frequency adjusted according to the quantity and nature of waste generated in an area.
Scope: Beyond traditional bulky furniture, the app also facilitates the disposal of items like old clothes, shoes, children's toys, and electronic goods.
Availability: The DClutter app is available for download on both the Google Play Store and the Apple App Store.
Addressing Illegal Dumping
Authorities highlight that the lack of a dedicated system for bulky waste disposal often resulted in these items being left on roadsides, footpaths, and empty plots. This practice not only created unsightly "garbage black spots" that reappeared even after cleaning drives but also posed environmental concerns.
The BSWML CEO, Karee Gowda, stated that the initiative aims to reduce roadside dumping, promote responsible waste disposal, and improve the city's overall cleanliness, while also supporting more systematic waste processing. A prior pilot cleanup drive reportedly collected close to 6,000 tonnes of bulky waste, underscoring the scale of unregulated dumping.

The introduction of the DClutter app comes amid ongoing challenges in waste management within Bengaluru, a rapidly growing metropolis. Environmental experts have voiced concerns about the strain improper waste handling places on existing landfill and processing infrastructure in such urban environments.
