BENGALURU — Commuters navigating Bengaluru's Namma Metro are slated for a change by August, as Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) intends to integrate three new six-coach trainsets onto the Green Line. This strategic move, involving the entire planned fleet of 23 CRRC-Titagarh trainsets, aims to reallocate existing rolling stock to the Purple Line, a corridor reportedly grappling with higher passenger volumes. The entire fleet of new trains is designated for the Green Line, with older trains from that line moving to the Purple Line.
Rolling Stock Realignment
The integration of these new trains is not a simple addition; it represents a significant redistribution of metro resources. Once the 23 new trainsets, equipped with 'Distance-To-Go' (DTG) technology, are fully operational on the Green Line, the current trains serving that route will be redeployed to the Purple Line. This maneuver is intended to bolster services on the Purple Line, which consistently experiences peak passenger traffic. The arrival of the new fleet is also anticipated to indirectly enhance services on the Purple Line.

Testing Trajectories and Technical Hurdles
The path to passenger service for these new trainsets has been protracted. A senior BMRCL official noted that testing protocols have extended beyond initial projections due to constraints imposed by conducting trial runs solely during non-operational hours on the existing Green Line. This restricted testing window, typically limited to a few hours each night, has paced the deployment. Officials confirmed that oscillation trials and the necessary sanction from the Railway Board are now complete.

Before these trains can carry passengers, they must clear a battery of 37 statutory requirements. This includes precise alignment tests to ensure they adhere to the exact stopping positions as the current BEML fleet. A final technical phase involves addressing issues within the Automatic Train Operation (ATO) mode, with assistance from Alstom. Following these adjustments, BMRCL will seek safety certification from the Commissioner of Metro Railway Safety (CMRS).

Fleet Dynamics
The total deployment strategy indicates that the Green Line will ultimately gain an unspecified net increase in train availability, while the Purple Line is expected to receive an influx of 17 older Phase-1 train sets. The new CRRC trains are described as DTG-enabled and share design similarities with the CBTC-equipped trains designated for the Yellow Line.
This operational shift is a response to the observed passenger flow across the network, prioritizing the reportedly busier Purple Line with the older, but now augmented, fleet. The full induction of the 23 trainsets is a contract awarded to CRRC in partnership with Titagarh Rail Systems Ltd., and is seen as a measure to improve overall operational efficiency and the commuter experience.
