Two members of the United States armed forces have gone missing in Morocco while participating in large-scale multinational military exercises. The individuals were reported absent on Saturday, near the Cap Draa Training Area close to Tan Tan, a coastal city in southwestern Morocco. A coordinated search and rescue operation, involving ground, air, and maritime assets from the US, Morocco, and other participating nations, is currently active.
The exact circumstances of their disappearance remain unclear, though initial reports suggest the service members went missing while on a hike after the conclusion of the day's scheduled exercises.
The incident occurred during African Lion, the largest annual joint military exercise on the continent. This sprawling operation, which commenced on April 27th and is slated to conclude on May 8th, encompasses training grounds across Morocco, Ghana, Senegal, and Tunisia. The exercise involves approximately 5,000 personnel from over 40 countries, alongside more than 30 US-based industry partners, focusing on enhancing interoperability.
