LUCKNOW: The final voter list for Uttar Pradesh will now be published on April 10, 2026, a month later than initially scheduled. This adjustment follows an extension granted for the period of filing claims and objections regarding the draft electoral roll. The move aims to accommodate a significant surge in applications and ensure a more accurate, clean-up voter registry.
The Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of Uttar Pradesh, Navdeep Rinwa, stated that the extended timeline was necessary to ensure the accuracy of the voter list. The original deadline for claims and objections was set to end on February 6, 2026, but was pushed back. This revision comes after a noticeable increase in submissions, particularly on the final day of the original window.

On February 5, 3,51,745 Form-6 applications for additions were submitted, a record number.
Over the period of the claims and objections window, more than 37.8 lakh Form-6 applications were received.
Additionally, 82,684 Form-7 applications for deletions or objections were filed.
Intensified Verification Amidst Clean-Up Drive
Booth-level officers (BLOs) are currently engaged in a detailed cross-checking process across their designated areas. This intensive verification aims to identify and remove duplicate entries and individuals who have moved out of their registered panchayat areas. Reports indicate instances where individuals were found registered at multiple booths, prompting a more rigorous clean-up. The Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise, designed to update and purify the electoral rolls, is a key component of this process.

A Decades-Long Overhaul
The current revision marks the first such comprehensive overhaul of the Uttar Pradesh voter list in 22 years. The exercise, which began in October 2025, is modeled on a similar initiative undertaken in Bihar. Its primary objectives are to weed out ineligible voters and include new, eligible citizens. The Election Commission of India launched this state-wide drive ahead of the anticipated 2027 assembly elections. A significant outcome of the initial draft list release on January 6, 2026, was a reduction in the total voter count. The draft list showed 12.55 crore voters, a notable decrease from the previous 15.44 crore, with 2.89 crore names not included in the initial draft.
