Hyderabad, Telangana - The Telangana government has outlined a significant initiative aimed at elevating women's self-help groups (SHGs) from local activities to substantial business ventures. Chief Minister Revanth Reddy announced a series of programs designed to equip SHGs with the capacity to establish and manage large-scale enterprises, including supermarkets, logistic parks, godowns, petrol bunks, and rice mills. This push marks a deliberate governmental effort to shift the focus of women's groups towards more expansive economic participation and financial independence.

The state government plans to facilitate this expansion through multiple avenues. Notably, the limit for bank linkage loans to SHGs is being doubled from Rs 5 lakh to Rs 10 lakh. Furthermore, the government is committing to provide land at nominal prices for these ventures, particularly in urban areas, and at strategic locations for businesses like petrol bunks. A key component of this initiative involves the construction of 8,000 dedicated buildings for SHG activities, offering them independent premises to conduct their operations, a move described as unprecedented.

In addition to infrastructure and financial support, the government is also exploring partnerships for the allocation of 1,000 RTC buses to women's groups, enabling them to generate income through rentals. The Chief Minister also spoke of plans to involve women's groups in solar power generation projects. The overarching objective, as stated by the Chief Minister, is to transform these groups into significant economic players, moving beyond smaller-scale livelihoods.

This broad empowerment drive is supported by previous government actions, including the facilitation of Rs 60,472 crore in bank linkage loans for women's groups and the reimbursement of approximately Rs 10,000 crore related to the free travel initiative for women on RTC buses. The state has also reportedly disbursed Rs 1,390 crore towards zero-interest loan schemes for these groups. The ambitious target is to foster an environment where a significant number of women become financially independent, with one report even suggesting a goal of creating one crore "millionaire women" by 2034.

The context for these initiatives appears to be rooted in practical challenges faced by the government. The Chief Minister alluded to difficulties in the supply chain for grain procurement, citing issues with millers and middlemen. This suggests that empowering SHGs to manage storage and logistics could offer a more streamlined and reliable alternative for the state. The establishment of "Indira Mahila Shakti Super Bazaars" on a corporate model in all 119 constituency headquarters is also part of this extensive plan.
