Record Profit Marked by 118% Surge
Nexon has reported a substantial leap in its first-quarter financial results, with net income climbing a striking 118% year-over-year to $360.7 million. This marks a period of significant financial performance for the gaming giant.
The company's revenue for the quarter reached ¥152.2 billion ($959.9 million), an increase of 34% from the previous year. Operating income also saw a healthy rise of 40% to ¥58.2 billion ($367 million). This robust showing was bolstered by the continued success of established franchises and strategic market plays.
However, the figures were impacted by a ¥6.7 billion ($42.2 million) reduction related to refunds for MapleStory: Idle RPG. This stemmed from a coding error earlier in the year that had incorrectly applied probability and statistical values to certain in-game paid items.
Strategic Adjustments and Development Pipeline
Amidst the financial upswing, Nexon has also undergone significant strategic adjustments. The company has undertaken a cancellation of three unannounced projects in the first quarter. This move is part of a broader strategy to refocus resources on games with demonstrable global potential.

This pruning of the development slate is coupled with an extension of their publishing partnership for Dungeon & Fighter on PC in China for a decade. This signifies a commitment to established, lucrative markets.
Nexon's development pipeline remains active, with 15 games and experiences currently in production. The company is specifically allocating additional funding to titles such as Nakwon: Last Paradise and Woochi the Wayfarer. Meanwhile, Arc Raiders reported selling an additional 4.6 million units during the quarter, bringing its total sales to 16 million.
Shifting Forecasts and Market Dynamics
Looking ahead, Nexon anticipates a revenue and income decline in the second quarter. This forecast is attributed to "tough year-over-year comparisons." The company, however, expects continued growth from its MapleStory franchise and Arc Raiders to help offset these anticipated downturns.

The company's overall revenue performance has shown growth across several key markets, supported by established franchises providing a "stable foundation." Nexon is actively pursuing innovation to maintain its momentum, diversifying its revenue streams across "multiple geographies to mitigate these risks."
Background and Future Outlook
Nexon currently operates more than 45 live games across PC, console, and mobile platforms in over 190 countries. Recent developments include the Japanese service launch of HIT2 on April 17 and the official Korean service start for MapleStory Worlds on April 25. The First Descendant is slated for a summer launch and currently holds the seventh position on Steam's wishlist.
The company's strategic focus appears to be on projects with broad global appeal, underscoring the importance of player engagement and retention. This shift in strategy may influence development approaches, aligning efforts with perceived market demands.

Further complicating the financial narrative, recent reports indicate a Supreme Court ruling in favor of Nexon, ordering Dark and Darker developer Ironmace to pay $3.8 million in a trade secret dispute. This legal victory adds another layer to the company's recent operational landscape.
