A concerted Russian missile and drone assault on the Kyiv region, occurring overnight into Saturday, has resulted in the deaths of at least four people and left 15 others injured, according to Ukrainian officials. The attack targeted energy and industrial facilities deemed to be serving Ukrainian armed forces, as well as military airfields, Russia's Defence Ministry stated. This wave of violence coincides with the observed Easter holiday, a period when Ukraine had expressed a willingness to consider a truce, a notion that has historically proven fragile.
Russia's defense ministry claims its strikes targeted energy and industrial facilities serving Ukraine's armed forces and military airfields. Ukrainian officials report a combined Russian missile and drone attack on the Kyiv region killed at least four and wounded 15. Separately, Ukrainian drones reportedly struck an oil refinery and port in Russia's southern Krasnodar region. The attacks occur amid hopes for an Easter truce, which has historically failed to hold.

Cross-Border Drone Strikes Reported
Simultaneously, across the border, two individuals were hospitalized in Russia's Leningrad region on Friday following a Ukrainian drone strike. This incident occurred more than 1,100 kilometers (684 miles) from the border. Earlier, on Thursday night, a Ukrainian drone strike on Russia’s Belgorod region, which shares a border with Ukraine, left 12 people injured, including at least three Russian soldiers.

Civilian Casualties in Eastern Ukraine
In Ukraine's northern Sumy region, near the Russian border, one person died on Friday after a Russian guided aerial bomb struck a residential block in the city of Shostka, local officials reported. Authorities have also reported sustained attacks on Kharkiv, Ukraine's second-largest city, beginning Thursday and continuing into Friday morning.

Background on the Conflict and Truce Hopes
The ongoing conflict sees both sides engage in cross-border strikes. Ukraine's President Zelenskyy had indicated a preparedness for Russian aerial attacks on critical networks. Easter, celebrated on April 12 in both Ukraine and Russia, has previously been a focal point for ceasefire attempts. However, historical precedents show that such truces have been short-lived, with numerous prior attempts failing rapidly. Some analysts suggest Russia has historically used declared ceasefires to gain battlefield advantages. Reports indicate that peace talks between Russia and Ukraine remain stalled.
