Kharkiv, Ukraine – Fires raged through a hotel in this eastern Ukrainian city following a series of overnight Russian strikes, according to local officials. The assault on Kharkiv, Ukraine's second-largest city, is part of a broader pattern of attacks that have targeted infrastructure and civilian areas across the country. Recent reports indicate that multiple sites, including residential blocks, schools, and a kindergarten, have been struck by drones and missiles, resulting in civilian casualties and widespread destruction.

Ukrainian authorities reported that Russia launched hundreds of drones and missiles targeting energy and railway infrastructure. While air defenses intercepted a significant portion of these, a number breached defenses, hitting 22 sites nationwide. In Kharkiv alone, official reports suggest at least four people were killed and nearly 60 injured in one recent drone and bomber attack. Subsequent attacks using glide bombs on Saturday evening reportedly killed one more person and injured at least 18 others. The attacks have sparked fires across multiple districts, impacting residential areas and vital infrastructure.

WIDESPREAD IMPACT AND CASUALTIES
The destruction in Kharkiv extends beyond a single hotel. Reports detail a residential block lying in ruins, with families missing and fires engulfing multiple floors. A kindergarten was also hit, forcing the evacuation of children, though no injuries were reported among them. Attacks on other regions, such as Zaporizhzhia and Kherson, have also resulted in fatalities and injuries. In one instance, a 69-year-old woman was killed and many others injured in Zaporizhzhia. In Kherson, two people were killed in separate Russian strikes.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has characterized these assaults as "absolutely deliberate Russian terror." He stated that Russia launched a barrage of drones and missiles overnight, damaging infrastructure and causing casualties, including children. He also noted that Russia conducted a rare daytime drone attack, killing four people in the central Cherkasy region and damaging energy infrastructure and industrial facilities in the west.

PATTERN OF ASSAULTS
The scale of these attacks appears significant. One report indicated that Russia launched 480 drones and 29 missiles targeting Ukraine. Ukrainian air defense units claimed to have shot down 453 drones and 19 missiles. However, the same report acknowledges that nine missiles and 26 attack drones hit 22 sites. Another account mentioned over 339 drones launched in overnight attacks, with a further 360 drones fired between 8 am and 6 pm on a subsequent day, of which 345 were reportedly shot down.
The targets appear to include not only energy and railway infrastructure but also port facilities. In Odesa, containers with vegetable oil were set on fire, and a grain warehouse was damaged.
BACKGROUND
The conflict, now in its fifth year, has seen a persistent pattern of Russian strikes on Ukrainian infrastructure. Officials have stated that Russia insists it is not targeting civilians, but Ukrainian officials counter that the attacks, including those striking residential areas and civilian facilities like schools and kindergartens, demonstrate the opposite. President Zelenskyy has also noted ongoing talks with US mediators aimed at resolving the conflict, while condemning Russia's response to his proposals for truces with airstrikes.
