A Sudden Silence in the Halls of Power
D. Sudhakar, Karnataka's Minister for Planning and Statistics, has passed away at the age of 66. His death, confirmed early Sunday morning by a hospital bulletin, follows a recent severe lung infection that complicated after knee surgery. He was declared deceased at 3:15 AM at Krishna Institute of Medical Science (KIMS) in Bengaluru, where he had been receiving treatment for the past two months.
The Hiriyur MLA's passing has drawn widespread, albeit predictable, pronouncements of sorrow and acknowledgment from across the political spectrum. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, who visited Sudhakar in the hospital, described him as a leader dedicated to public service. Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar echoed these sentiments, noting Sudhakar's "exemplary public service." State health minister Dinesh Gundu Rao also expressed his shock.
A Political Landscape Shifts
Sudhakar, a senior Congress leader, served as the MLA for Hiriyur constituency in Chitradurga district for four terms. He was also the District In-charge Minister for Chitradurga, where he was associated with irrigation and infrastructure projects. His tenure saw him occupy key ministerial portfolios, culminating in his current role overseeing planning and statistics.

His mortal remains are expected to be kept at his Bengaluru residence for public viewing before being transported to his native town of Challakere in Chitradurga district. A holiday has been declared in Chitradurga district.
The Machinery of Grief
The official statements, while varied in their phrasing, coalesce around a shared narrative of a committed public servant. Reports note his prolonged illness and multi-organ complications as the direct cause of death. Leaders from various parties have extended condolences, acknowledging his contributions to the state's political framework. This collective mourning, while seemingly genuine, underscores the performative nature of political discourse in moments of loss. The pronouncements, broadcast through news wires and local bulletins, serve to solidify a public image, transcending immediate political divides in a ritualized display of respect.
