Suspension Revoked, But Questions Linger
The Karnataka government's decision to lift the suspension of Director-General of Police K. Ramachandra Rao has drawn sharp criticism from A.H. Vishwanath, a BJP MLC and former minister. Vishwanath has not only voiced strong disapproval but has also hinted at potential impropriety, suggesting the possibility of "kickbacks" in Rao's return to active duty. This move comes after Rao was initially suspended in January 2026 following the circulation of unverified videos purportedly showing him in compromising situations within his office.
The government's swift action to revoke the suspension, however, has not quelled the unease. Vishwanath's objections center on Rao's past, citing his alleged involvement in a bus robbery case during his time as an Inspector-General of Police in Mysuru. Furthermore, Rao's connection to his step-daughter, Ranya Rao, who is currently facing charges in a significant gold smuggling case, has added another layer of complexity to the situation. Ranya Rao was apprehended in March 2025 with a substantial quantity of gold, and her ongoing legal battle has cast a shadow over her stepfather's official standing.

The Genesis of the Suspension
The initial suspension of DGP K. Ramachandra Rao occurred in January 2026 after videos circulated on social media, which news channels broadcasted, allegedly depicting him in "compromising positions with women." The government cited "conduct unbecoming of a government servant" and the embarrassment caused to the state administration as grounds for his immediate suspension. At the time, Home Minister G. Parameshwara had stated that such actions were "disrespectful and unacceptable," and that dismissal could be a potential consequence if the charges were proven. Rao had reportedly submitted an explanation to the allegations, which he had previously denied as fabricated, claiming the video was an alteration of footage from eight years prior.
Background and Associated Controversies
The circumstances surrounding DGP Rao's suspension are intertwined with the ongoing legal troubles of his step-daughter, actress Harshavardhini Ranya, also known as Ranya Rao. She is accused of orchestrating the illegal import of gold valued at over ₹12.56 crore from Dubai. Ranya Rao was arrested at Bengaluru's Kempegowda International Airport in March 2025 with 14.8 kilograms of gold and is currently in judicial custody at the Bengaluru Central Jail. The suspension order for Rao also included restrictions on his movement, requiring written permission from the state government to leave his headquarters. The news of Rao's reinstatement now intersects with these unresolved legal proceedings, fueling further questions about the government's decision-making process.
