A local unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Manipur's Churachandpur district has publicly voiced its dissatisfaction with both the central and state party leadership. The Thanlon unit is protesting what they term a lack of action concerning the death of Vungzagin Valte, a sitting BJP MLA.

The core of the protest centers on the perceived failure to secure justice for MLA Valte, whose attack eventually led to his death. A statement from the Thanlon BJP unit questions the efficacy of the ruling party's governance when even a legislator cannot attain justice, stating, "If a sitting MLA cannot get justice, what hope is there for ordinary victims of the violence?"

The Thanlon BJP unit pointed out that Valte was a member of their party, which currently holds power at both the state and national levels. Despite this, the family and community, along with the party unit, continue to await resolution and justice in the case.

Wider Protests for Justice
Beyond the internal party dissent, a broader protest was organized by the Central Village Defence Force (CVDF). This group held a road march in Churachandpur to condemn the death of MLA Valte and to demand justice for other victims of the ongoing ethnic violence in Manipur. The march specifically highlighted the plight of the Zo community, many of whom have fallen victim to the conflict.

The Manipur unrest, which has claimed at least 260 lives and displaced thousands, has seen broader criticism leveled against the BJP government.
Internal Strife and Governance Critiques
Reports indicate growing internal discontent within the Manipur BJP, with some legislators reportedly desiring a change in leadership. This discontent surfaces amid broader criticisms regarding the state and central governments' handling of the crisis.
Former Manipur Governor Anusuiya Uikey has expressed surprise at Prime Minister Narendra Modi's absence from the state, despite numerous appeals.
The Congress party has called for the resignations of Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Chief Minister Biren Singh, referencing past statements by Prime Minister Modi about the right to govern.
Even within the BJP, MLAs like Rajkumar Imo Singh have publicly criticized the perceived ineffectiveness of central forces in restoring peace, suggesting their removal if they remain ineffective.
The situation has been further complicated by political realignments, such as the NPP breaking its alliance with the BJP. This period has seen various community representatives and political figures expressing division over accountability, security, and governance.

Background of Conflict
Manipur has been engulfed in ethnic violence, primarily between the Meitei and Kuki-Zo communities, since early May 2023. The conflict has led to widespread displacement, loss of life, and a deep-seated sense of insecurity, with communities and their representatives remaining divided on pathways to resolution. The prolonged unrest has intensified scrutiny on the governance structures and the ruling party's response to the escalating crisis.
