IMPHAL - Operations by security forces in Manipur have resulted in the destruction of numerous clandestine structures, identified as "illegal bunkers," across the Ukhrul and Kangpokpi districts. Concurrent actions in the Tengnoupal district led to the seizure of a significant quantity of improvised explosive devices (IEDs).
Recent reports detail the destruction of up to 23 illegal bunkers in Ukhrul and three in Kangpokpi. In separate incidents, 18 IEDs were confiscated in Tengnoupal. These actions follow closely on the heels of a period marked by heightened security presence and operations.
Details emerge from disparate reports over the last few days and weeks:
Ukhrul District Operations: Multiple reports indicate a focus on Ukhrul, with figures ranging from 21 to 23 bunkers razed. Locations cited include Mongkot Chepu, Shongphel, Mullam, Sirarakhong, Ringue, and Sikibung villages, often under the purview of the Litan police station. Some reports mention these operations being conducted in coordination with local police.
Kangpokpi District Operations: In Kangpokpi, three bunkers were reportedly destroyed at Lungter hill, with one each at Tingpibung and Leplen villages, areas falling under the Saikul police station. Other reports indicate a total of 12 bunkers destroyed across Kangpokpi and Ukhrul districts in recent days.
Tengnoupal District Seizures: The Tengnoupal district, particularly the Moreh police station area, has been the site of explosives recovery. Initial reports mention 18 IEDs seized, while others state 13 IEDs. Arms and ammunition, including a 12-bore pump action gun, cartridges of various calibres, and empty bullet casings, were also recovered. Two 9mm pistols, combat uniforms, and backpacks were also noted in some seizures.
Churachandpur District Recoveries: In a separate context, amidst reports of continuing ethnic tensions, security forces in Churachandpur district seized weapons including an AK-47 rifle, grenades, and an 81mm mortar.
The timing of some of these operations has been linked to specific incidents, including the reported killing of a Border Security Force (BSF) constable in the Ukhrul district. Authorities have stated that such operations are part of ongoing efforts to maintain law and order.
