The hospital cited multi-organ failure as the cause of death, though initial reports indicated her admission on Saturday evening was due to "extreme exhaustion and a chest infection," with hospital sources monitoring for "cardiac and pulmonary complications."
The artist, a recipient of the Padma Vibhushan and Dadasaheb Phalke Award, leaves behind a discography reportedly exceeding 12,500 songs across multiple languages, a career that spanned eight decades. Her voice lent itself to a constellation of leading actresses, from the classic era of Meena Kumari and Madhubala to later stars like Kajol and Zeenat Aman, and prominent South Indian performers such as Padmini and Vyjayanthimala.
