KYIV - Ukraine is repurposing a Soviet-era turboprop aircraft, the Antonov An-28, to launch smaller interceptor drones against Russian aerial threats. This unconventional strategy transforms the light transport plane into a mobile, airborne carrier for quadcopters designed to neutralize incoming Shahed attack drones. The An-28, reportedly borrowed from a civilian operator, now functions as an airborne drone launcher, expanding Ukraine's aerial defense capabilities.
The adapted An-28 is equipped to release several interceptor drones. These smaller craft boast significant speed, with some capable of exceeding 200 mph. One such drone reportedly set a speed record of 248.5 mph in December. This development offers a potentially more cost-effective air defense solution compared to traditional missile systems, particularly against the proliferation of cheaper, mass-produced drones.
LOW-TECH SOLUTION FOR HIGH-TECH CHALLENGE
The deployment of the An-28 highlights Ukraine's efforts to counter Russia's growing swarm tactics. Russia has increased its reliance on Shahed-style drones, which are manufactured using components from various international sources, driving down their per-unit cost. The An-28's adaptation represents a strategic shift towards simpler, more adaptable defenses against these persistent aerial assaults.

Initial reports suggest the An-28 has achieved notable success, with one aircraft reportedly credited with dozens of Russian drone kills. The plane's relatively slow speed and manageable flight characteristics are cited as advantages for this specialized role. Ukrainian forces have been observed operating the An-28 with a gunner firing from its open side door, suggesting a multi-faceted approach to aerial engagement.
BACKGROUND: RUSSIA'S DRONE CAMPAIGN AND UKRAINE'S DEFENSE
Russia has employed various drones, including Shahed variants, in its ongoing campaign against Ukraine. These drones have been observed over other European countries as well, raising regional security concerns. Ukraine has been exploring numerous methods to intercept these threats, driven by the increasing frequency and scale of Russian drone attacks. The An-28's prior service as a civilian transport aircraft, possibly linked to a hobbyist flying club, underscores the improvised nature of some of Ukraine's defense innovations.
