Telangana is grappling with a significant temperature surge, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing heatwave warnings for Monday, May 18, across seven districts. Temperatures are forecast to touch 44°C in some areas, with Nizamabad recording 41.6°C and Adilabad 41.3°C in the past 24 hours. Health authorities are urging citizens to be vigilant for symptoms of severe heat-related illness, including confusion, seizures, rapid heartbeat, and body temperatures exceeding 40°C, emphasizing the need for immediate medical attention.
The state's health department has issued multiple advisories, highlighting risks associated with prolonged exposure to extreme heat, particularly when combined with high humidity. These warnings, which have been a recurring theme in the past weeks, underscore a persistent pattern of escalating temperatures.
Districts Under Alert
Isolated pockets in the districts of Adilabad, Kumaram Bheem Asifabad, Mancherial, Nirmal, Nizamabad, Jagtial, and Rajanna Sircilla are expected to experience heatwave conditions. Officials have also flagged Bhadradri Kothagudem and Khammam for temperatures ranging between 38°C and 40°C, with a projected surge imminent. Orange alerts have been issued for several districts, signalling a need for heightened caution.

Health Department's Advisory
The health department's advice, disseminated through various channels, centers on preventative measures and symptom recognition. Key recommendations include:
Remaining indoors as much as possible, especially in cool, well-ventilated spaces.
Avoiding strenuous physical activity during peak heat hours, typically between noon and 3 pm.
Staying hydrated by drinking plenty of water, even when not feeling thirsty.
Consuming oral rehydration solutions (ORS) and cooling homemade drinks such as buttermilk, lemon water, and fresh fruit juices.
Wearing loose, light-coloured cotton clothing and covering the head with umbrellas, caps, or towels when outdoors.
Minimizing exposure by keeping windows and curtains closed during the day, particularly on the sunny side of the house.
Officials have stressed that symptoms like dizziness, nausea, high body temperature, rapid heartbeat, and confusion are critical indicators requiring immediate medical attention at the nearest government health facility.
Preparations Underway
To manage potential heat-related emergencies, the state government has reportedly made arrangements across public health facilities. These include the provision of special beds, intravenous fluids, essential medicines, and ORS sachets.
Historical Context
Advisories regarding rising temperatures and heatwave precautions have been issued by Telangana health authorities intermittently. Recent warnings, such as those in April 2026, indicated temperatures nearing 45°C, with multiple regions already recording temperatures above 43°C. Even in March 2025, similar advisories were in place as temperatures were expected to rise over a three-day period, emphasizing hydration and reduced outdoor activity. The recurring nature of these warnings suggests a consistent challenge posed by summer heat in the region.
