Sydney, NSW – April 9, 2026 – A 63-year-old man remains in a critical condition after being allegedly attacked with a hammer by a known visitor in his hospital bed at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in Camperdown. The incident occurred just after midnight on Thursday, April 9, with authorities stating the alleged motive for the assault is the theft of a deceased brother's ashes.

The accused, identified as 46-year-old Viki Graham, reportedly entered the hospital, spoke with nursing staff, and proceeded to the ward where the victim, identified as Brett Jones, was admitted. Police allege Graham then struck Jones on the forehead with a hammer while he was asleep.

Hospital staff are cooperating with the NSW Police investigation into the event, which has been described as deeply distressing by Sydney Local Health District Chief Executive Deb Willcox. She noted that hospital staff were "very fond" of the patient and that the incident was unprecedented for the institution. Emergency services were called to the scene at 12:15 AM on Thursday.

The Alleged Confrontation and Arrest
Graham allegedly made statements to police indicating the attack was retribution for Mr. Jones having stolen her late brother's ashes. Following the alleged assault, Graham reportedly attempted to flee the ward but was prevented from doing so as the doors had been secured.

Ms. Graham was arrested at the scene and subsequently refused police bail. She appeared in Downing Centre Local Court on Thursday, April 9, and is scheduled for a further appearance on June 4. Graham, who reportedly works part-time at a local pub, was denied bail and will remain in custody until at least that date. The court heard Mr. Jones has been hospitalized since January.
Hospital Response and Patient Impact
The attack took place within a four-bed bay in the hospital's general ward. Other patients present in the ward have been described as "rattled" by the violent intrusion. Sydney Local Health District stated they are working to contact Mr. Jones's loved ones and are assisting police inquiries. The hospital confirmed its emergency department remains operational 24 hours a day.
