At least 96 individuals have perished and over 50 more are injured following a violent confluence of dust storms, heavy rain, and lightning across northern India, particularly in Uttar Pradesh. The destructive weather event unfolded late Wednesday, leaving a trail of damaged homes and downed trees in its wake. Officials have confirmed the grim toll.
Widespread Devastation
The storms carved a path through multiple districts, with Bhadohi, Prayagraj, and Mirzapur reporting significant casualties. Homes, including mud structures, collapsed under the force of the winds. Uprooted trees crashed onto residences, vehicles, and roadside establishments, exacerbating the destruction. Power lines were also reportedly severed.
"We spent the night at a relative’s house," one survivor recounted. "We could hear trees falling throughout the evening.”
Another resident described their family's narrow escape after strong winds damaged their mud house.
Relief Efforts Underway
In response to the catastrophe, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has ordered immediate relief and compensation for those affected. Officials have been directed to provide all possible assistance to the impacted populations.

Seasonal Pattern
These storms are not entirely unprecedented in northern India, occurring periodically during the hot season stretching from March to June, preceding the arrival of the annual monsoon rains. However, the ferocity and accompanying fatalities mark this as a particularly severe event.
Delhi-NCR Disrupted
Separately, a sudden storm system also paralysed the Delhi-NCR region around May 2, 2025. This event, characterized by rain and lightning, led to widespread waterlogging and traffic chaos. The Delhi Fire Services fielded over 100 rain-related calls, while flight operations at Delhi Airport experienced significant delays. Power distribution companies reported and resolved numerous weather-related complaints. Delhi's Chief Minister at the time, Rekha Gupta, extended condolences and announced financial aid.
