TUCSON, AZ – Authorities are piecing together a disturbing image of the events surrounding the disappearance of Nancy Guthrie, an 84-year-old woman from the Catalina Foothills area near Tucson. Surveillance footage captured a masked individual, clad in gloves and carrying a backpack, loitering near Guthrie's residence in the early hours of February 1. The figure was observed tampering with the camera before it was disabled. Guthrie was reported missing the following day after failing to attend a scheduled church event and remaining unresponsive to family calls.
Investigators believe Guthrie was specifically selected for abduction, indicating a premeditated act rather than a random crime. This assessment stems from observations suggesting the perpetrator had prior knowledge of her habits and living situation. A private investigator, commenting on the incident, characterized the suspect's actions as potentially indicating an "amateur" element, based on the visible surveillance footage.

The individual in the footage was also seen wearing a holster that appeared to contain a firearm. A glove was later recovered near Guthrie's home and has been submitted for forensic analysis. Authorities have stated that DNA evidence found inside Guthrie's home could be crucial in identifying the suspect, though initial processing indicated the DNA might be mixed, possibly containing contributions from multiple individuals. The Pima County Sheriff, Chris Nanos, has explicitly stated that Nancy Guthrie's family members have been ruled out as suspects.
Further complicating the inquiry, a ransom note demanding millions for Guthrie's safe return was reportedly sent to TMZ. The FBI has released details about the backpack used by the suspect – a black, 25-liter Ozark Trail Hiker Pack – and provided an estimated height for the individual of 5 feet 9 inches to 5 feet 10 inches.

While the suspect's identity remains unknown, investigators are working under the assumption that Guthrie was taken against her will. The possibility of more than one perpetrator is not being ruled out by investigators. Early reports noted the presence of Guthrie's blood on her front porch.
Nancy Guthrie, the mother of Today co-host Savannah Guthrie, was last seen on the evening of January 31, after having dinner with her other daughter, Annie. The timeline suggests the abduction occurred sometime between her return home and the morning of February 1. The motive behind the abduction remains unclear, though it is not believed to be linked to her daughter's public profile or wealth.
