Aizawl, Mizoram - At least 77 houses have sustained damage across four districts in Mizoram over the past two days, battered by relentless heavy rains, windstorms, and resulting landslides. The state's Disaster Management and Rehabilitation Department confirmed the figures, noting that four of these residences were completely destroyed.
The ongoing meteorological event has compelled authorities to close schools in multiple districts as a precautionary safety measure. While specific numbers fluctuate between reports, it is clear that numerous educational institutions, including some health sub-centres, an Anganwadi centre, and a public library, have also been affected.
The widespread precipitation, accompanied by strong winds peaking at speeds of 50 to 60 kmph, is expected to continue in parts of Kolasib on Wednesday and Aizawl on Thursday, according to weather forecasts.
Widespread Disruption and Infrastructure Concerns
The inclement weather has led to a significant number of school closures across the state. Reports indicate that nine districts saw their schools shut down on Tuesday, with Aizawl, Kolasib, Lunglei, and Mamit explicitly mentioned. By Wednesday, this number extended to five districts, including Aizawl, Serchhip, and Lunglei, remaining closed for a second day.

The southern districts of Hnahthial and Lawngtlai, which had initially kept schools open on Wednesday, also subsequently ordered closures. This broad shutdown strategy, according to School Education Director Angela Zothanpuii, is a direct response to the ongoing adverse weather and a move to safeguard students.
Infrastructure damage has been noted in various locations. In Siaha district, three houses and one school building were damaged. Kolasib district, bordering Assam, reported damage to four houses. The southern districts, beyond houses, also saw damage to two church halls.
Rainfall Data and Forecasted Conditions

Mamit recorded 47.5 mm of rain.
Khawzawl reported 35.5 mm.
Serchhip received 34.5 mm.
Siaha registered 34 mm.
Other districts like Kolasib recorded 25 mm, and Lawngtlai 17.5 mm.
The India Meteorological Department has forecast light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning likely to occur in Mizoram over the next three days across several districts, including Aizawl, Kolasib, Mamit, Champhai, and Serchhip. This outlook further justifies the administrative caution being exercised.
Historical Context of Weather-Related Disruptions
This is not the first instance of widespread disruption due to severe weather in Mizoram. In early June 2025, schools across 10 districts were closed for safety concerns amid landslides and rockfalls. Earlier in late May 2025, schools statewide were shut for three days (May 29, 30, and June 2) due to similar conditions. A report from June 2, 2025, noted that all 11 district administrations had ordered school closures, citing IMD forecasts of continued heavy rainfall and potential hazards like landslides and mudflows. On Friday, May 30, 2025, schools in Aizawl had also been closed for a second consecutive day due to incessant rain triggering landslides.
