Michael Patrick, an actor known for his roles in 'Game of Thrones' and 'Blue Lights', has died at the age of 35. The cause of death was a three-year struggle with Motor Neuron Disease (MND). Patrick passed away on Tuesday, April 7th, spending his final 10 days in hospice care.

His wife, Naomi Sheehan, announced his death, describing him as a "titan of a ginger-haired man" and a source of love. She highlighted his resilience and determination to continue creating work despite his illness. Patrick's death was confirmed on Wednesday, April 8th.

The actor remained active in his creative pursuits following his diagnosis, with performing and writing serving as a crucial focus away from his condition. He showcased his tenacity by continuing to perform on stage, including an appearance at the Lyric Theatre in Belfast last November with his autobiographical piece, 'My Right Foot'. He also notably adapted Shakespeare's 'Richard III' to incorporate themes reflecting his own health battle, a production that earned him an award.

A Career Marked by Resilience and Talent
Patrick, originally from Belfast, made a significant impact on both theatre and television. His stage work garnered critical acclaim, including a prestigious Stage Award for his performance as Richard III. This role, performed at the Lyric Theatre, was particularly poignant as he portrayed the character as a wheelchair user, adapting the play with his co-writer Oisín Kearney to reflect his illness.

Beyond his theatre achievements, Patrick was recognized for his television roles. He appeared in a Season 6 episode of HBO's 'Game of Thrones', the BBC drama 'Blue Lights', 'This Town', and co-wrote the BBC series 'My Left Nut', which drew on his adolescent experiences. He also featured in projects such as 'Blasts from the Past' and 'The Spectacular'.
Patrick received an Overcoming Adversity award at the Spirit of Northern Ireland Awards last year, acknowledging his strength in the face of his diagnosis. His neurologist had, in February, predicted he might have about a year to live, with hopes for a drug trial to extend that time. He had made the personal decision to decline a tracheostomy, opting to spend his remaining time outside of hospital walls.

Tributes and Legacy
Colleagues and loved ones have remembered Patrick for his remarkable talent, courage, and the dignity with which he faced his illness. Executive producer Jimmy Fay of the Lyric Theatre stated that "these islands have lost a great artist" and paid tribute to Patrick's strength and positive outlook. Fay extended condolences to his wife Naomi, his mother, sisters, and friends.
Patrick's final social media post, made on February 6th, discussed his health updates and a hospital stay, hinting at the challenges he was facing. His wife, Naomi, has been a central figure in sharing updates about his journey and their shared decisions during his illness. His work, particularly his adaptation of 'Richard III' and his autobiographical performance, are seen as testament to his enduring spirit and creative drive.
Michael Patrick's father also passed away from MND when Michael was a child.
