SLUMP IN SALES REPORTED; OFFICIALS POINT TO EXTERNAL FACTORS
Bengaluru: An estimated 14.59% decrease in beer sales has been registered in Karnataka. Government officials, in their assessment, have identified a confluence of factors for this downturn. Chief among these cited reasons is the new excise policy enacted in neighbouring Andhra Pradesh, which is reported to be influencing purchasing patterns in border districts.
The Karnataka government has officially stated that the Andhra Pradesh excise policy, alongside adverse weather conditions, has led to a noticeable drop in beer sales within the state.
The ripple effect of Andhra Pradesh's updated excise framework is purportedly being felt most acutely in Karnataka's frontier districts. These include areas such as Kolar, Chickballapur, Tumakuru, Chitradurga, Ballari, and Raichur. The prevailing narrative suggests that with liquor becoming more accessible and potentially cheaper across the border, the draw for consumers from these border regions to purchase in Karnataka has diminished. This, in turn, is seen as a direct contributor to the overall sales decline.

Further complicating the sales landscape, authorities have also pointed to inclement weather patterns. Specific mention has been made of heavy rains and unusually cold temperatures experienced in certain districts, which are understood to have dampened demand for beer. The combined impact of these external influences is being assessed by the Excise Department.
The department has responded to the situation by reinforcing its presence in border areas. This includes the establishment of three permanent excise checkposts situated in these strategic locations. Additionally, vehicles traversing major highways are undergoing inspection, a measure apparently intended to monitor cross-border liquor movement and its potential impact on local sales figures. The department indicates that further actions will be considered pending a review of recommendations from an internal committee.
