Kalaburagi district in Karnataka has been recognized by NITI Aayog for achieving 100% institutional deliveries. This success was presented at a workshop involving district officials from across southern India and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Rohit Kumar, Additional Secretary at NITI Aayog, deemed the program a model that could be replicated elsewhere.
The initiative centers on ensuring pregnant women in identified "aspirational blocks"—specifically Afzalpur, Shahabad, and Kalagi within Kalaburagi—receive early antenatal care, starting in the first trimester. Participants also receive nutritional support aimed at improving maternal health. The district administration's efforts in facilitating these processes, leading to all deliveries occurring within healthcare facilities, were highlighted.
Aspirational Blocks Programme Framework
NITI Aayog's broader 'Aspirational Districts Programme' and its extension, the 'Aspirational Blocks Programme', aim to accelerate development at the local level. This approach emphasizes leveraging existing resources and developing customized interventions suited to the unique challenges of different states and districts. The program tracks progress across 49 Key Performance Indicators spanning health, nutrition, education, agriculture, water resources, financial inclusion, skill development, and infrastructure. These efforts are described as localizing the 'Sustainable Development Goals' to foster national progress.
