Indianapolis, IN – April 8, 2026 – A political figure supporting a new data centre project in his district found his home targeted by gunfire early Monday morning. Approximately 13 rounds were discharged into the residence of Indianapolis City-County Councilor Ron Gibson, a Democrat representing District 8. Investigators recovered a note left at the property reading "No Data Centers."
The incident, which occurred around 12:45 a.m. on Monday, April 6, targeted Gibson’s home while he and his eight-year-old son were present. Neither individual sustained physical harm, though the bullets struck near areas frequented by the child. Police confirmed the shooting and are treating it as a targeted attack. The FBI has been brought in to assist the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) in the ongoing investigation, with IMPD taking the lead.
The attack follows closely on the heels of a decision made last week by the Indianapolis Metropolitan Development Commission, which approved a rezoning petition for Metrobloks, a data centre developer, to proceed with construction in Gibson’s district. This project has been a point of contention for at least six months, drawing opposition from some local residents and community groups concerned about its potential environmental and public health impacts, including significant water usage.

Gibson has publicly stated that the violence will not sway his position on the data centre proposal. "That reality is deeply unsettling," he commented regarding the attack. "I will continue to serve the residents of this district with integrity and respect for all voices.”

Concerns over AI infrastructure and its proliferation are reportedly mounting nationwide, with residents in various suburban and rural areas pushing back against substantial tech investments. National sentiment shows an increasing dislike for AI, and politicians across the political spectrum have introduced legislative measures, including moratoriums on data centre construction in several states.

Despite facing boos from the crowd at a previous meeting when he voiced support for the rezoning, Gibson's backing of the project was noted. The rezoning petition requires further approval from the Indianapolis-Marion County City-County Council.

One neighborhood group, Protect Martindale-Brightwood, which has opposed the data centre, has condemned the act of violence at Gibson's home and denied any involvement.
