Protected Species Targeted in Interstate Operations
A California resident, Donald Do, has been arrested and faces federal wildlife-trafficking charges for allegedly orchestrating a scheme to export loggerhead musk turtles. Authorities announced on Friday, May 15, 2026, that Do obtained a federal permit by falsely claiming the turtles were captive-bred. The investigation suggests Do was involved in poaching and selling over 1,700 of these protected reptiles.
Allegations of Poaching and Deception
Do is accused of acquiring loggerhead musk turtles, a species classified as protected, from the wild in Florida and other locations. He allegedly presented these poached animals to the US Fish and Wildlife Service under the guise of a legitimate captive-breeding operation to secure export licenses. The actual number of turtles Do attempted to export in one instance was reported as 292.
Accomplice Also Detained
In a related development, a Louisiana man, identified as Albert Bazaar, has also been taken into custody. Authorities allege that Do attempted to purchase approximately 200 turtles from Bazaar, who is also facing charges related to turtle trafficking.

Loggerhead Musk Turtles Under Scrutiny
Loggerhead musk turtles are distinguished by their notably large heads. Their classification as a protected species means that activities involving their trade, especially across state lines, are subject to stringent federal regulations. The alleged actions of Do and Bazaar highlight a continued challenge in combating the illegal trade of protected wildlife.
