New Delhi/Puducherry – March 22, 2026 – The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has finalized its candidate for the Karaikal (South) constituency in the upcoming Puducherry Assembly elections, slated for April 9. M Arulmurugan has been announced as the party's nominee for this seat. This announcement comes as part of a broader electoral arrangement within the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in the Union Territory, where the BJP is contesting 10 seats.

The decision to field Arulmurugan has not been met with universal approval within the party ranks. Reports indicate instances of internal dissent, with some party members expressing their dissatisfaction by burning their party identity cards outside the BJP office in Puducherry. This public display of protest suggests underlying tensions regarding candidate selection and the party's internal dynamics.

Alliance Dynamics and Seat Distribution
The BJP's participation in the Puducherry elections is as an ally of the All India N.R. Congress (AINRC), which leads the coalition. The seat-sharing agreement within the NDA allocates 16 constituencies to the AINRC. The AIADMK and the Latchiya Jananayaga Katchi (LJK) are set to contest two seats each. The BJP’s final tally of 10 seats means their candidate list is now complete for the Union Territory.

Broader Electoral Context
The territorial Assembly comprises 30 seats. Among the BJP's nominated candidates is the Union Territory's Home Minister, A Namassivayam, who is seeking re-election from Mannadipet. The Election Commission has scheduled the polling for all 30 seats in Puducherry for April 9, with vote counting to follow on May 4. The region holds approximately 9.44 lakh eligible voters.

Internal Candidate Contention
The nomination of M Arulmurugan for Karaikal (South) appears to be one of the final decisions made by the BJP's Central Election Committee, which convened on March 18 to finalize candidates for various poll-bound regions. Notably, Sai J Saravanan Kumar, a former minister in the outgoing government, was reportedly not given a ticket. E Theepainthan, a nominated legislator, has been fielded by the BJP in the Oussudu constituency.
The broader political landscape in Puducherry involves the incumbent Chief Minister and AINRC leader, N Rangasamy, having affirmed the continuation of the alliance with the BJP. This confirmation followed discussions with Union Minister and BJP leader Mansukh Mandaviya.
