Puducherry Chief Minister N. Rangasamy has resigned from his post, a procedural move following the National Democratic Alliance's (NDA) victory in the recent assembly polls. This resignation, submitted to Lieutenant Governor K. Kailashnathan on Thursday, May 7, 2026, formally concludes his current term and initiates the process for the formation of a new government. Rangasamy, leader of the All India N.R. Congress (AINRC), has indicated his intention to stake a claim for the next government shortly.
The NDA coalition secured a clear mandate, retaining power in Puducherry. The AINRC emerged as the single largest party with 12 seats in the 30-member Legislative Assembly. Other NDA constituents, including the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) which won four seats, the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) and the Latchiya Jananayaga Katchi (LJK) securing one seat each, contributed to the alliance's overall strength.

The political landscape of Puducherry saw a decisive outcome, with the NDA coalition comfortably crossing the majority mark. The opposition faced a significant setback, with the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) winning five seats and the Indian National Congress managing only one seat.
New Entrant Makes Mark
A notable aspect of this election was the debut performance of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), which secured two seats. This new political outfit made its presence felt in a significant way.
Rangasamy's Continuing Tenure
This development positions N. Rangasamy for what would be his fifth term as Chief Minister. His long political career, marked by a focus on welfare initiatives such as subsidized housing, education support, and student nutrition programs, is often cited as a key factor in his continued electoral success. However, potential complexities in cabinet formation may arise, possibly due to internal discussions within the NDA regarding representation and influence.
