Belagavi, Karnataka - Nine individuals have been formally charged by the Hirebagewadi police for orchestrating a social boycott against a family in Kondaskoppa village. This action follows allegations that the accused instructed villagers to sever all contact with the affected family, reportedly the Sambarekar family, under threat of penalties.
The core of the allegations centers on a decree that prohibited any form of interaction with the family. Sources indicate that a fine of ₹5,000 was announced for any villager found speaking with them. Furthermore, a reward of ₹1,000 was purportedly offered to individuals who reported any such contact to the village elders.
The complaint, initially submitted on April 6, names Mallappa Sambarekar, Vitthal Sambarekar, Baganna Sambarekar, Ramesh Sambarekar, Malinga Sambarekar, Gangappa Sambarekar, Vaiju Sambarekar, Piraji Sambarekar, and Yallappa Sambarekar as the individuals responsible for enforcing this ostracism. Reports suggest the FIR was registered only after the matter gained media attention, raising questions about the initial response of law enforcement.

The alleged boycott has reportedly led to the family being excluded from community events, including weddings and religious functions, and has impacted even basic social interactions. The family claims to have been subjected to harassment and threats, leading them to leave their village at one point.
While community leaders have categorically denied the allegations, stating the family misbehaved and issued threats, the complaint details a situation where the family feels their basic rights and dignity are being violated.
The dispute appears to stem from issues related to local temple practices and potentially a personal matter. The affected family, identified as belonging to the Kuruba community, was previously involved in duties as priests for the local Beeradevara temple. Differences are alleged to have arisen between the family and a local community committee over temple rituals. The village, Kondaskoppa, is located within the Belagavi Rural constituency, which is the home turf of women and child welfare minister Laxmi Hebbalkar.
