FEDERAL GOVERNMENT MANDATES GAS HOLD-BACK
The federal government has finalized new rules requiring gas companies to retain 20% of their potential export volumes within Australia. This directive, announced on Thursday, comes after deliberations with industry players and other interested parties. The government asserts this measure aims to bolster the domestic gas supply. This policy update appears to follow earlier adjustments in Western Australia, where a ban on onshore gas exports was partially lifted. These changes in WA, implemented around September 2024, sought to encourage resource development by allowing a portion of onshore gas production to be sold internationally, thereby accessing higher global prices. Prior to these alterations, WA's domestic gas policy had kept local prices lower than those on the eastern seaboard. The state government introduced an annual Domestic Gas Statement to track producer compliance and forecast domestic supply.
NSW HEALTH SYSTEM UNDER SCRUTINY
A separate, significant national conversation is unfolding concerning the New South Wales health system. A royal commission has heard testimony suggesting the NSW health system is "not safe" for Jewish people. Witnesses have reportedly described experiences of fear, including a patient left "paralysed with fear" after a threatening video was allegedly encountered. Allegations have also surfaced regarding Iranian-sponsored firebombing and an environment of "ignorance" and apprehension among some healthcare workers.
