Rayalaseema and Coastal Andhra Pradesh are currently enduring significant heat, with warnings of severe heatwave conditions issued across numerous districts. Temperatures are expected to peak around 44°C in some areas. This intense heat is anticipated to persist, with hot and humid conditions predicted for at least the next few days.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has identified 46 mandals likely to experience severe heatwaves and an additional 73 mandals facing heatwave conditions, particularly in north coastal districts.
Despite the prevailing heat, isolated light to moderate rainfall has been observed in parts of Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Rayalaseema. These rains, though not widespread, offer a temporary reprieve from the scorching temperatures.
Shifting Weather Patterns
A confluence of atmospheric phenomena appears to be influencing the current weather. An upper air cyclonic circulation over north Tamil Nadu, coupled with a north-south trough extending across Chhattisgarh, Telangana, Rayalaseema, and interior Tamil Nadu, are contributing factors. These systems are enhancing moisture influx and triggering localised convective activity, leading to the sporadic rainfall.

Regional Hotspots and Forecasts
Andhra Pradesh: Severe heatwaves are forecasted for mandals in Srikakulam, Vizianagaram, Parvathipuram Manyam, Alluri Sitarama Raju, Polavaram, Anakapalli, Kakinada, and East Godavari. Coastal Andhra and Rayalaseema regions are also expected to experience high temperatures. Hot and humid conditions are predicted to continue for the next four to five days in Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam, and Rayalaseema.
Tamil Nadu: While rising temperatures are expected to intensify hot and dry weather across the state, isolated light rainfall is forecast for parts of southern Tamil Nadu, including Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli, and the Western Ghats regions. Chennai and its suburbs are expected to experience continued hot and humid conditions.
Other Regions: Heatwave conditions may persist in pockets of East Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, and Chhattisgarh, with forecasts indicating continued heat into next week for parts of North-West and Central India. Light rain is also anticipated in coastal Karnataka.
Background on the Phenomenon
The current weather situation is partly attributed to a heat-builder anticyclone moving eastwards. This atmospheric feature involves the sinking of air, creating dry and hot conditions near the ground. As this anticyclone shifts its base, it influences the movement of hot winds across peninsular India.
Historical data from March 2025 indicates that parts of Rayalaseema had previously received light to moderate rain, with specific rainfall amounts noted in Sri Sathya Sai district. In September 2018, reports suggested continued rain over Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Rayalaseema, with some districts like Anantapur recording significant rainfall. Earlier in April 2026, specific districts in North Coastal AP and Rayalaseema, including Ambedkar Konaseema and Tirupati, had also experienced light to moderate rainfall.
