Safety Scrutiny Follows Falling Metal Bar at Yishun HDB
A metal bar, dislodged during dismantling operations at the Chong Pang City worksite, plummeted through the roof of a Housing Development Board (HDB) block in Yishun on May 2nd. The incident, which occurred at Block 103 Yishun Ring Road, resulted in damage to the roof's common corridor area. Crucially, no injuries were reported. The Singapore Land Authority (SLA), the lead agency for the Chong Pang Integrated Development (CPID) project, confirmed the details on May 3rd.
Site Shutdown and Investigation Underway
Following the mishap, a 'stop-work order' has been issued for the Chong Pang City construction site. The main contractor, Rich Construction Company, is now cooperating with authorities, including the SLA and the Building and Construction Authority (BCA), to pinpoint the cause of the accident. The BCA has requested a detailed report from the contractor.
Immediate Response and Resident Assurance
A coordinated response team, comprising representatives from the SLA, HDB, Town Council, grassroots leaders, and the contractor, was promptly on-site to assess the situation on the night of May 2nd. Temporary repair works have commenced, and residents have been assured they can continue using common areas, with the exception of the cordoned-off section damaged by the falling debris. The interior of the affected flats remained undamaged.

The Chong Pang City development, described as a comprehensive community hub blending lifestyle, recreation, and convenience, had recently celebrated its 'topping out' ceremony on April 18th. The project aims to introduce commercial spaces and a focus on sustainability.
This incident echoes past concerns regarding falling objects from construction sites. In April 2017, two metal bars fell from an HDB block at Indus Road, with one reportedly missing from another block. In that case, blocks were also cordoned off, though no injuries were sustained.
