The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared the escalating Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda a "public health emergency of international concern." This declaration follows documented international spread, with cases appearing in Uganda's capital, Kampala, and within the DRC's own capital, Kinshasa. As of Saturday, the outbreak in DRC's Ituri province has seen 80 suspected deaths, eight laboratory-confirmed cases, and 246 suspected cases across at least three health zones.
International Spread Confirmed
The international dimension of the crisis became evident with the confirmation of two seemingly unconnected cases in Kampala, Uganda, one resulting in a fatality. These individuals had traveled from the DRC. Furthermore, a confirmed case was reported in Kinshasa, DRC, involving an individual who had returned from Ituri province. The WHO has issued guidance advising individuals with contacts or confirmed cases of the Bundibugyo virus-disease against international travel, unless for medical evacuation.

Regional Risk Elevated
The organization cited population mobility, trade, and travel as factors contributing to the high risk of further spread in countries bordering the DRC. Governments in these neighboring regions are urged to enhance their surveillance and health reporting mechanisms. Despite the gravity of the declaration, the WHO stated that the current situation, with approximately 246 suspected cases and 80 deaths, does not yet meet the criteria for a pandemic emergency.
Background on the Outbreak
The initial outbreak was officially announced in Congo on Friday. The death toll in the eastern province of DRC was reported by its health ministry on Friday, standing at 80 fatalities. The reported cases in Ituri province are spread across the health zones of Bunia, Rwampara, and Mongbwalu. The severity of the situation has prompted comparisons to past health crises, with one Kampala resident recalling the loss of a family member during the COVID-19 pandemic. The first death in Uganda linked to this specific outbreak was recorded on May 14th at Kibuli Muslim Hospital in Kampala.
