A physical dispute in a Waterford West car park on Tuesday afternoon resulted in a 48-year-old man being placed in an induced coma due to a serious head injury. Joshua Kevin Goeree, 29, has been charged with serious assault in relation to the incident.
The confrontation occurred around 4:20 PM on Bourke Street, involving at least five individuals. Police allege Goeree punched the 48-year-old victim, identified as an off-duty firefighter, in the face. The impact caused the man to fall, striking his head on the bitumen. He was subsequently transported to hospital and remains in a medically induced coma. Goeree was arrested at the scene and was scheduled to appear at Beenleigh Magistrates Court on Wednesday.
The altercation reportedly began inside a pub on Bourke Street and escalated, moving into the Aldi car park across the road. While initial reports suggested the dispute centred on a wash basin, the exact catalyst remains part of the ongoing investigation.

This incident in Logan brings to mind other recent cases of violence in public spaces. A separate, serious incident reported on the same Tuesday involved an alleged stabbing while a man was assisting a friend with moving. That investigation has led to a murder charge against a 33-year-old man, with police identifying at least five crime scenes.
The reported circumstances echo incidents beyond the immediate locale, including a man's death following an assault in a Lagos car park on a Sunday after accusations of theft, and a veteran left in a coma after a dispute over speeding in a neighbourhood, where a delivery driver was allegedly involved. Furthermore, an alleged racially motivated assault in Adelaide left a 23-year-old man with serious injuries, including brain trauma and facial fractures, after being beaten unconscious.
