A massive blaze, accompanied by explosions, ripped through the Viva Energy refinery in Geelong late Wednesday night, halting production at a facility critical to the nation's fuel security. The incident, which broke out around 11 PM on April 15, has severely damaged the plant, with officials stating that Australia may need to increase its fuel imports in the wake of the disruption.
The Geelong refinery, one of only two remaining operational oil refineries in Australia, supplies approximately 50% of Victoria's fuel and 10% of the nation's total fuel needs. It processes up to 120,000 barrels of oil daily. The fire reportedly originated in the MOGAS (motor gasoline) section of the complex, a crucial unit for refining motor fuel.
Fire Rescue Victoria incident controller Mick McGuinness described the scene as "very confronting," with flames reaching heights of up to 60 metres. While firefighters are working to contain the blaze, its full extent and the exact cause remain under investigation. Viva Energy has indicated they are looking into "equipment failure" as a potential cause. Mayor Stretch Kontelj noted that refinery operators had not yet identified a definitive cause, mentioning an unusual "intense vacuum" sound at the site.

The refinery's closure raises immediate concerns about potential impacts on fuel supplies. Energy Minister Chris Bowen acknowledged that while fuel reserves currently stand at 38 days of petrol, 28 days of jet fuel, and 31 days of diesel, the disruption would likely affect petrol and jet fuel availability. This incident occurs against a backdrop of global fuel supply uncertainties, with the ongoing 'war in Iran' cited as a factor threatening international markets.
Residents in Geelong were advised to stay indoors due to the smoke plume. All refinery staff have been accounted for, and at this early stage, Viva Energy has stated there is no "immediate impact on fuel supplies." However, the severity of the damage, particularly to two gasoline production units, suggests a prolonged shutdown.
A Shrinking Domestic Capacity
This event underscores the precariousness of Australia's domestic refining capacity. Over the past two decades, six of the nation's eight oil refineries have been shuttered, leaving only the Viva Energy facility in Geelong and the Ampol Lytton refinery in Brisbane. This consolidation means Australia currently imports approximately 90% of its liquid fuel requirements, making the operational status of these two remaining plants a matter of national strategic importance.
