Kyiv launched a significant, multi-pronged drone offensive overnight, targeting over a dozen Russian regions, including the capital, Moscow. Russian authorities reported intercepting hundreds of aerial devices, with initial accounts indicating fatalities and injuries. This represents one of the largest coordinated drone assaults on Russia since the conflict's outset.
Ukraine's aerial operation, described as a response to recent Russian strikes on Ukrainian cities, saw an estimated over 550 drones deployed, according to Russian officials. Russian defense claimed to have shot down 556 drones overnight across various regions and an additional 30 after dawn. The Ministry of Defense stated that 279 out of 287 Russian drones were intercepted by Ukrainian forces during the same period.
At least four people were reported killed in the Ukrainian attacks, with multiple others injured. Three fatalities occurred in the Moscow region, with one death attributed to a drone strike in the Belgorod region. Reports from Moscow mentioned drone debris falling on the premises of Sheremetyevo Airport, Russia's largest, though no damage was reported.

Scale and Scope of the Attack
Russian officials detailed interceptions across 14 regions of Russia, alongside the annexed Crimean peninsula. Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin reported that air defenses destroyed over 120 drones heading for Moscow and its immediate surroundings. TASS cited Sobyanin stating that 81 drones were destroyed over Moscow since midnight, characterizing it as the largest attack on the capital in over a year.
The attacks followed a period of intense Russian aerial assaults on Ukraine. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy had previously vowed retaliation after Russian strikes, including one on a Kyiv apartment block that killed 24 people, including children.
Precedents and Context
This recent extensive drone deployment is not unprecedented. In March, Russia launched 948 drones at Ukraine over a 24-hour span, described as the largest such attack since the war began. Conversely, Ukraine has also engaged in retaliatory actions. In early May, following Moscow's rejection of a ceasefire offer, Russia reported downing 347 Ukrainian drones in what was described as the second-largest aerial attack on Russia in over four years.
