Fires have recently broken out at several derelict hotels across the UK, prompting significant firefighting responses and raising questions about the ongoing vulnerability of abandoned properties.
In Ballycastle, Northern Ireland, a large blaze at the former Antrim Arms hotel drew a substantial emergency effort. On Sunday evening, the Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service (NIFRS) dispatched 42 firefighters, two aerial appliances, and a command support unit to combat the fire, which was first reported at 20:08 BST. Police cordoned off major routes around the Diamond area and urged onlookers, particularly young people, to disperse.
Elsewhere, on the Isle of Wight, the former Cygnet Hotel in Sandown has experienced multiple fires. On October 18, 2025, a significant blaze required six appliances, two aerial ladder platforms, and two water carriers. An Incident Command Support Vehicle was deployed as the situation unfolded. By August 9, 2025, firefighters were again called to Sandown to extinguish a fire at the derelict Parkbury Hotel, this time tackled with hose reel jets. The Isle of Wight Ambulance Service was present, though no injuries were reported.

Fires Spark Arson Investigations
The recurring nature of these incidents has led to suspicions of deliberate acts. In November 27, 2025, a fire at the old Seaton Heights Hotel building in Seaton, Devon, prompted an arson probe. Firefighters from ten stations battled the blaze in the early hours of Wednesday morning, with initial reports indicating the building was fully involved in fire. Authorities believe the fire may have been set deliberately, posing a 'large risk' to the public.
Abandoned Buildings Vulnerable to Vandalism and Fire
These fires highlight a broader issue of abandoned properties becoming targets for anti-social behaviour. In September 23, 2024, six fire engines and a height vehicle responded to a "well-developed" blaze at the Airth Castle Hotel in Scotland. Police Scotland had increased patrols in the area due to ongoing vandalism and fire-raising at the site, which had been closed for approximately 19 years. Since its closure, the building had reportedly been subject to vandalism and break-ins.
