The first unit of the Udangudi Thermal Power Plant, a significant component of Tamil Nadu's energy infrastructure, has been commissioned by Chief Minister M.K. Stalin. This activation marks the culmination of a project valued at approximately ₹13,077 crore.

The project, situated in the Thoothukudi district, comprises two units, each with a 660 MW capacity, promising a total addition of 1,320 MW to the state's power grid. The activated unit is expected to bolster the state's electricity generation capacity, aiming to meet existing demand and reduce reliance on external power procurement. Power generated will be channeled through a 400-kV gas-insulated substation.

Beyond the thermal plant, Stalin also presided over the inauguration of various other completed projects, valued at ₹211.90 crore, laid the groundwork for nine new initiatives totalling ₹53.76 crore, and flagged off 28 new vehicles costing ₹3.28 crore.

This broader inauguration sweep included projects within the Municipal Administration and Water Supply sector, worth ₹265.66 crore. Notably, the Coimbatore Western Ring Road, an 11.8 km four-lane highway constructed at a cost of ₹250 crore, was also unveiled. An additional 9.15 km stretch was widened and improved under the Chief Minister's Road Development Schemes for ₹59.15 crore.

Project Timeline and Milestones
Initial reports of the Udangudi Thermal Power Plant's readiness surfaced as early as May 2025, with projections for the first 660 MW unit to commence operations. By July 2025, over 90 percent of Unit 1's construction was reportedly complete, with officials expressing optimism about its role in ensuring energy security, particularly during peak summer demand.
A crucial step towards operationalization was the synchronization of the first 660 MW unit with the grid in September 2025. By February 2026, trial operations were underway, with boiler lighting initiated after securing necessary permissions, signaling an imminent commissioning. Turbine work for the second unit was noted as pending at that time.

Infrastructure and Financial Implications
The project's construction involved substantial infrastructure development, including an offshore coal jetty approximately 8 km from Kallamozhi, equipped with a pipe conveyor system for efficient fuel delivery. Officials from Tamil Nadu Power Generation Corporation Limited (TNPGCL) and Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (TANGEDCO) have overseen the project's progression.
The activation of the plant is anticipated to improve the financial standing of the Electricity Board and contribute to the state's socio-economic development. The plant's capacity is designed to significantly bolster Tamil Nadu's power infrastructure and meet growing industrial and domestic electricity needs.
