Kolkata: A scheduled legislative party meeting for the Trinamool Congress (TMC) on Sunday was significantly disrupted, with a substantial number of Members of the Legislative Assembly failing to appear at the residence of party supremo Mamata Banerjee. Sources indicate that approximately 60 out of 80 TMC MLAs were absent, leading to the cancellation of the gathering.

The widespread no-show is being attributed by party officials to a "sudden and emergent ground situation", citing recent alleged attacks on senior party leaders Abhishek Banerjee and Kalyan Banerjee. TMC MLA Kunal Ghosh stated that legislators were occupied with organizing ground-level protest programs in response to these incidents and subsequent alleged police actions against party workers.

Meeting Deferral and Explanations
The meeting, intended to address matters including a Criminal Investigation Department (CID) probe into alleged forgery of signatures on a letter nominating Sobhandeb Chattopadhyay as the assembly's Leader of the Opposition (LoP), was postponed. While party leadership claimed those absent had informed them of their engagements in handling protests and assisting detained party workers, the sheer scale of the absence has raised questions.

Party sources also indicated that informal discussions were held with the limited number of leaders present. The cancelled meeting was to also discuss the fallout from the alleged attacks, which the TMC has blamed on the ruling BJP. The BJP, however, has refuted these accusations.

Background and Political Context
The incidents surrounding the alleged attacks on Abhishek Banerjee and Kalyan Banerjee have escalated political tensions in West Bengal. Abhishek Banerjee reportedly sustained an injury near his eye during an alleged incident in Sonarpur, while Kalyan Banerjee claimed head injuries after being allegedly mobbed outside a police station in Hooghly. The TMC has been organizing demonstrations, accusing BJP workers of targeting its leadership. This episode unfolds against the backdrop of the party's electoral performance and internal dynamics.
