The Thanjavur District Railway Users’ Association, alongside other commuter groups and elected officials, continues to press for the doubling of the single-track rail line between Thanjavur and Villupuram. The proposed two-phase approach, prioritizing the Thanjavur-Mayiladuthurai section first, has been reiterated, with a particular emphasis on completing this segment before the 2028 Mahamaham festival.
Several public representatives, including MPs Murasoli and D. Ravikumar, have formally raised this issue with the Union Railway Ministry. Their appeals highlight that the Villupuram-Thanjavur mainline, much of which was laid over 145 years ago, struggles to cope with current train volumes, forcing frequent en-route stops for crossing. This single-track reality impedes efficient service and is identified as a major impediment by the local populace.

The association argues that the Thanjavur-Mayiladuthurai section acts as a critical feeder for other branch lines, including Mayiladuthurai-Agasthiyampalli/Mannargudi, Peralam-Karaikal, and Thiruthuraipoondi-Karaikudi. Insufficient track capacity on this main artery directly constrains the operational potential of these secondary routes. This situation has even led to the planning of special trains bypassing the Thanjavur-Mayiladuthurai stretch, rerouting through Tiruvarur.

The call for doubling this mainline section is not new. Representations have been made consistently over the years.
March 2024: The Thanjavur District Railway Users’ Association made its demands known.
July 2025: A resolution passed at the association's annual general body meeting urged the Southern Railway to expedite approvals for doubling the Thanjavur-Villupuram section, targeting completion between Thanjavur and Mayiladuthurai by the 2028 Mahamaham festival.
August 2024: Lok Sabha MP Murasoli highlighted the aging infrastructure and operational bottlenecks of the Villupuram-Thanjavur section in Parliament.

The historical importance of the Villupuram-Thanjavur mainline as a crucial artery for both passenger and freight transport appears to be diminishing due to these infrastructure limitations.
