Detroit, MI – Tarik Skubal, the Detroit Tigers' two-time reigning American League Cy Young Award winner, is slated for arthroscopic surgery to address loose bodies in his left elbow. The procedure follows a flare-up experienced during his last outing, prompting tests that confirmed the need for intervention. The timeline for Skubal's return remains undisclosed, casting a significant shadow over the team's playoff aspirations and his own impending free agency.
Manager A.J. Hinch confirmed the surgery on Monday, stating Skubal experienced pain in his elbow on Sunday. Despite the discomfort, Skubal reportedly threw a warmup pitch and proceeded to strike out the side to conclude his performance that evening. A trainer and Hinch had previously visited the mound in the seventh inning after Skubal appeared to be rubbing his left arm.

The decision for surgery comes after Skubal had been "dealing with it off and on all year," according to the pitcher himself. He maintained that his ligament structures are intact, and the surgery is not expected to affect them. The procedure was scheduled after Skubal experienced another flare-up during his routine on Sunday, despite feeling ready to pitch on Monday.
Skubal’s absence represents a substantial blow to the Tigers, who had been building momentum with playoff aspirations. His performance in postseason games has been notably strong, with a 2-1 record, a 2.04 earned run average, and 56 strikeouts over six starts. This season, Skubal has posted a 3-2 record with a 2.70 ERA across seven starts, accumulating 45 strikeouts in 43 1/3 innings.
This marks Skubal's third surgery on his left elbow in his career. The news also casts a pall over his final year before becoming eligible for free agency, as the lack of a return timetable creates considerable uncertainty for both the player and the franchise.
