Chennai, India - Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin has sharply denounced an apparent assassination attempt on Farooq Abdullah, former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir and president of the Jammu and Kashmir National Conference. The incident, which occurred on March 11th during a wedding ceremony in Jammu, saw an individual detained after allegedly attempting to attack Dr. Abdullah.

Stalin, in a public statement posted on X, declared such acts of violence "unacceptable in a democracy." He expressed solidarity with Dr. Abdullah and his son, current Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah. The Tamil Nadu Chief Minister conveyed relief that Dr. Abdullah emerged from the event unharmed, noting the alleged assailant approached at "point blank range with a loaded pistol" before discharging a shot.

The purported assailant, identified as Kamal Singh Jamwal, claiming to be the chairman of 'Jagran Manch', allegedly harbored a two-decade-long "hatred" towards Dr. Abdullah. Omar Abdullah publicly questioned the security lapse that allowed Jamwal to get so close to a former Chief Minister with Z+ NSG protection.

Meanwhile, the condemnation from Nayinar Nagendran, identified as a BJP leader, regarding a separate incident involving a 'PMK executive' named M.K. Stalin in Tamil Nadu, points to a broader climate of political contention and accusations of deteriorating law and order. Nagendran alleged a breakdown in security, stating, "How can you expect peace and safety for the public when political leaders who serve the people cannot be provided security in Tamil Nadu?" He further asserted that the ruling DMK government appears more preoccupied with "advertisements" while the police have become an "enforcer for the ruling party." These remarks were made in September 2025, in relation to an incident involving petrol bombs at a town panchayat office.
