Suvendu Adhikari, the Leader of the Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly, submitted his nomination papers for the Nandigram constituency in Purba Medinipur district. He did so at the Haldia Sub-Divisional Officer (SDO) office on Monday. The filing was attended by senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) figures, including Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and former State BJP President Dilip Ghosh. Adhikari, who also faces Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in the Bhabanipur seat, asserted his confidence in a "decisive victory" for the BJP in the state.

The submission of nomination papers by Suvendu Adhikari for the Nandigram constituency is a key procedural step in the upcoming West Bengal Assembly elections, scheduled in two phases on April 23 and April 29. The presence of prominent BJP leaders like Dharmendra Pradhan and Dilip Ghosh underscores the party's strategic focus on this particular seat and the broader electoral battle in Bengal.

Adhikari's political manoeuvre places him in a high-stakes contest against Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who is contesting from her traditional stronghold of Bhabanipur. This juxtaposition has made the Bhabanipur seat one of the most keenly observed contests in the state. Adhikari has publicly stated his belief that the electoral arithmetic favouring the BJP in Nandigram has improved since the 2021 elections, suggesting the contest there has become "easier."

Two other BJP candidates from the Purba Medinipur district, Pradip Kumar Bijoli (from Haldia) and Subhash Panja (from Mahisadal), also filed their nominations alongside Adhikari. Adhikari’s campaign message appears to blend promises of governance with ideological positioning. He has linked the success in Haldia, Mahisadal, and Nandigram to the region's "development," "industrial growth," and "overall progress."

Adhikari's political trajectory includes a previous victory in the Nandigram Assembly seat in 2016 as a Trinamool Congress (TMC) candidate, before he switched to the BJP some months prior to the 2021 Assembly polls. His current campaign involves a dual-front strategy, contesting from Nandigram and Bhabanipur simultaneously. This move is seen as a reflection of both personal ambition and calculated political strategy, cementing his role as a significant figure in the BJP's West Bengal campaign. The elections will cover the 294-member West Bengal assembly.
