Saturday Night Live UK (SNL UK) debuts this Saturday at 10 PM, aiming to provide levity in what its lead producer, James Longboard, describes as a "rough world." The show, which will broadcast live from London, intends to blend the familiar format of its US counterpart with a distinctively British sensibility.

"We need comedy more than ever in this rough world."James Longboard, Lead Producer, SNL UK
The inaugural episode features SNL veteran Tina Fey as host, with musical guests Wet Leg. Subsequent weeks will see Jamie Dornan hosting on March 21st, accompanied by Wolf Alice, and Riz Ahmed taking the stage on April 4th with Kasabian.

The core cast of SNL UK comprises Hammed Animashaun, Ayoade Bamgboye, Larry Dean, Celeste Dring, George Fouracres, Ania Magliano, Annabel Marlow, Al Nash, Jack Shep, Emma Sidi, and Paddy Young. Producers have acknowledged a palpable mix of excitement and nerves as the live broadcast approaches.

Longboard has indicated that while the show builds upon the established SNL structure, including elements like the opening monologue and "Weekend Update," it is actively carving out its own unique identity. This includes a deliberate effort to imbue the series with a "distinctly British tone," with producers stating they are "sweating Britishness."

The writers' rooms are described as a convergence of "30-odd comedic geniuses, all different voices, all different shticks, all different backgrounds," with the process involving "throwing stuff at the wall."
The Sky series has been commissioned for six episodes. Lorne Michaels, the creator of the original Saturday Night Live, has reportedly been involved in the UK production, assisting with the writers' room. Key creative appointments for the series include Liz Micallef as executive producer, with her experience in large-scale live productions and established relationships across the music and comedy industries. Nigel Lythgoe and Jon Schneider are also noted for their extensive backgrounds in television production, comedy oversight, and live entertainment.

Longboard expressed optimism about the production, calling the lineup "special" and noting the intense collaborative process behind the scenes. The series aims to replicate the comedic success of its American predecessor while cultivating its own brand of humor for a UK audience.
