A new defense manufacturing complex in Shirdi, Maharashtra, is slated for inauguration by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on May 23. The facility, a venture by NIBE Limited, is designed to produce critical defense items, including artillery shells, drones, and aerospace components. The two-day inauguration event is anticipated to draw a considerable gathering of government officials, defense personnel, industry leaders, and aspiring engineers. Beyond its primary manufacturing function, the complex is projected to foster employment, contributing to the regional economy. Notably, the unit is also positioned to engage in defense exports, aligning with broader national objectives for self-reliance in defense and increasing India's footprint in the global defense market.

The transformation of Shirdi, a town primarily known for its spiritual significance with the Sai Baba temple, into a defense manufacturing hub is being framed by some as a confluence of devotion and power. The establishment of this complex involves an initial investment of ₹1,000 crore and is spread across 200 acres. NIBE Limited, the implementing entity, has indicated a capacity to produce five lakh shells annually. The participation of dignitaries such as Chief of Defence Staff Gen Anil Chauhan and Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis underscores the strategic importance of this facility.
