A devastating collision between a tempo and a truck on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad Highway in Palghar district, Maharashtra, has resulted in the deaths of 13 people. Officials confirmed Tuesday that a First Information Report (FIR) has been lodged against both drivers, citing various traffic violations that authorities believe precipitated the crash. The tempo, reportedly carrying passengers to an engagement ceremony, was moving on the wrong side of the Mumbai-Gujarat lane, a significant breach of road rules.
The incident, which occurred near Dhaniwari village in Dahanu taluka on a rainy Tuesday evening, unfolded into a scene of widespread destruction. Several others sustained injuries, with some critically wounded. The tempo driver has been detained and faces charges that include culpable homicide not amounting to murder. The truck driver, who also sustained injuries, is currently under police watch in a hospital and has also been booked.

Traffic Violations and Circumstances
Authorities point to a confluence of factors contributing to the tragedy. Palghar District Guardian Minister Ganesh Naik, who visited the accident site, highlighted the role of heavy traffic on the busy highway, exacerbated by what he described as the tempo driver taking a "wrong-side shortcut." A statement from the Palghar District Administration explicitly noted the tempo's movement on the incorrect side of the lane. The tempo was described as overcrowded.
The impact of the collision was severe, leading to the truck overturning and some victims becoming trapped beneath its cargo. Among the injured, the condition of at least five individuals deteriorated to the point where they required placement on ventilators. The tribal development minister, Dr. Ashok Uike, has indicated that his department will provide long-term support to the families of those who perished.

Previous Incidents and Road Safety Measures
This fatal crash is not the only recent road incident on this stretch. On May 1, a dumper collided with a car carrying Palghar BJP MP Hemant Sawra, who, along with his driver, escaped with minor injuries. The MP's car was in a different location on the highway when that incident occurred. Authorities have indicated plans to work on increasing the height of central dividers to mitigate future accidents. Road safety officials have stressed the importance of motorists adhering strictly to traffic regulations.
